ABOUT

So, I set about drawing a 20mile radius around the restaurant and discovered a bounty of fascinating, world-class suppliers whose livelihoods I wanted to improve.

Over the last decade we have learnt what people love about Great British food and it rarely changes –

Any day of the week suits for Britain’s best Bangers and Mash and for a good English breakfast. On those rare occasions when the sun is out, we want a damned good barbecue (not charred like Dad's) and some good summer beers, but we always care that we are eating affordably and ethically – At the Big Bang, we provide that and we guarantee that.

We will rarely force feed our ethics to you, but I’d encourage you to talk with our Sausageers and find out more about the provenance of our food, the story behind the hand roasting of our coffees, or of the rearing of our pigs or the Victorian genius of our brewers, and you’ll find out what a colourful local story we are a part of.

The Big Bang is the true gastronomic experience of Oxford, we do our best to source everything from within 20 miles of the city and in doing so, we allow you to taste the real flavour of Oxford, not a chain restaurant version of it. We also throw in the best of our art, of local live music, all served up in Oxford's prettiest corner with a touch of Oxford charm.

Great Britain has so much excellent food to celebrate and so many small, local suppliers worth supporting, that a restaurant that celebrates local cuisine and allows visitors, locals and students alike to enjoy the best of what Britain grows, has been Oxford's firm favourite since 2004.

We have recently moved to premises, right at the heart of Old Oxford, in the Oxford Castle Quarter, where a new heart of this city beats.  It allows us a much wider space to spread our wings and it lets us to do the things that customers have been asking for during the last years of growth; we can now offer a stunning barbecue terrace, a range of Great British dishes, including a full English Breakfast each day, and Oxford's finest bangers and mash, for when nothing else will do. Drop in and see us, to discover the finest glistening Quarter of Oxford and see why The Big Bang is Oxford's favourite restaurant.
We know that a dining experience should always be a fun experience, but we don’t want to go and have a processed version of what someone else thinks should be fun.

Coach Parties, Large Bookings & Student Deals:
We offer the perfect spot for coach parties, with enough room to fit you and your party of up to 150 visitors in comfortably – We’re even directly accessible from the coach drop-off point and within easy reach of the centre of town, there isn’t a better situated place to visit in order to feast on the greatest of British food.

We’ve always been a firm favourite of the student fraternity, we offer a special rate for crew dates and offer BYO Wednesday when all sports teams can bring their own booze or buy from us at a specially reduced rate. We even offer ball and other outdoor catering facilities at a very competitive rate.

Max Mason, Proprietor

After 8years spent seeing all corners of the world, as a Royal Naval Officer, I decided that Britain had way too many faceless, characterless chain restaurants which offered no real impression of the Great British cuisine. Visitors to Britain's prettiest city were never actually being given a fair impression of how good we were.  I was struck that you could go out for an 'Indian', a 'Chinese' but never a 'British'.
